Abstract: The engineering of a complex system poses splendid challenges that extend well beyond the core technical elements of the project. Success will be facilitated by mastery of a number of areas of engineering know-how that generally are learned through experience. The author will describe some engineering challenges he has faced and share lessons learned pointed toward a family of skills and techniques necessary to get the job done. Examples mainly involve naval ships and submarines.
