Title: Theoretical Studies of Flow Induced Coalescence in Viscous Liquids
Gary Leal · University of California, Santa Barbara,
Department of Chemical Engineering
Abstract: This talk will summarize our recent theoretical efforts to study the flow induced coalescence problem. Recent experimental studies have provided detailed data on the conditions for coalescence by studying the collision and interaction of small drops (20-40 micron) in well-defined flows. After a brief review of this work, I will talk about computational studies of the same problem using boundary-integral techniques, and an approximation for van der Waals forces via a disjoining pressure. The objective is to reproduce the experimental data and thus to understand some of the unexpected observations. I will discuss our successes and our difficulties in reaching this objective.
