Title: Ambient Intelligence Enabling Future Programmes in Personal Health and Sustainable Development
Seán Cian Ó Mathúna · Tyndall National Institute
Abstract: Ambient Intelligent Systems will open entirely new possibilities for future applications and resultant markets. Ultimately, these systems will create intelligent environments that cater continuously for the requirements of the individual in everyday life (i.e., health, security, comfort, entertainment and education) and apply it in a totally coherent manner. They will learn and evolve to anticipate user-requirements. In this future knowledge-driven society, the person and their needs will be the central driver for ICT development in contrast to the traditional computer-centric information age - we describe this future vision of the world in the context of "in the body, on the body and around the body". This talk will discuss the ongoing development and integration of micro and nano technologies within the Tyndall National Institute that will enable the future vision of ambient intelligence with specific application in the area of personalised health (e.g. wearable motion sensing for elderly care in the home, in-vivo localised cancer treatment and swallable SMART Pills) and Sustainable Development (e.g., remote environmental monitoring, sustainable agriculture and energy management). Details will be given on ongoing research programmes in the areas of wireless sensor hardware platforms, relevant interconnection and packaging technologies, power delivery solutions and deployment case studies. Technology roadmaps and future research challenges will be discussed.
