Undergraduate Advising - FAQ (PDF; 5 pages, 238KB. For currently enrolled ME students)

For the first semester of the Freshman year all engineering students are advised through the Student Affairs Office, Room 1124, of the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Subsequently, all students who have declared their major as Mechanical Engineering are advised by Dr. David Bigio, Director of Undergraduate Studies, or Terry Island, Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies, who serve as the undergraduate advisors for Mechanical Engineering. The advising office is located in Room 2186 of the Engineering Classroom Building.

It is suggested that students maintain frequent contact with both the Student Affairs Office of the College of Engineering and the Undergraduate Advisor's Office for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Useful information is posted on the bulletin boards or placed on the tables outside of these offices.

Registration

All Mechanical Engineering students must be advised through the Undergraduate Advisor's Office before registering for classes. Departmental approval is required for all ENES and ENME courses. Prior to the pre-registration period each semester, information regarding registration is made available outside the Undergraduate Advisor's Office (Room 2186). During the pre-registration period, students are required to stop by this office for advisement. At this time, the student's record is reviewed, the registration block is removed, advice is given on the selection of courses, and permission is given for ENES and ENME courses for the upcoming semester. Then the student is ready to register using the Maryland Automated Registration System (MARS) at the appointed time.

Student Records

The Undergraduate Advisor's Office maintains a close check on the departmental course requirements. A pre-requisite flow chart is kept for each student. In addition, each student is required to have a coursework plan on file. Copies of these forms are provided herein. It is strongly suggested that each student maintain their own copies of these forms.

Questions regarding the University CORE requirements are handled in the Student Affairs Office. It should be noted that students in the College of Engineering have requirements in addition to those imposed by the University. For example, all engineering students must take ENGL 393 and must satisfy a Theme requirement.
