ENME Undergraduate Honors Program
There are three levels of honors programs available to students in Mechanical Engineering. The University has a general honors program primarily for freshmen and sophomores, the School of Engineering has an honors program primarily for juniors and seniors, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering has an honors program for students at all levels. It is possible for students to participate in any combination, including all, of the three honors programs.
If you are intellectually curious and are seeking a challenging academic environment, the Mechanical Engineering Honors Program may be the right choice for you. Entering freshmen typically have a high school GPA of 3.5, a math SAT score of 700 or higher and, on average, a combined SAT score of 1350.
Program Benefits
- Only students with the highest academic credentials are invited to participate
- Classes are limited to a small number of students which facilitates discussion and close interraction with faculty
- Research opportunities and design projects are an integral part of the program, providing students with a hand-on experience during their undergraduate education
- Students meet frequently and informally with faculty advisors
- Financial opportunities are available to the students through scholarships and teaching, and research fellowships
The Honors Program of the Mechanical Engineering Department is intended to provide a challenging and rewarding experience for the top undergraduates in the department. This program is compatible with the University Honors Program and with the School of Engineering Honors Program. Students in the program are challenged intellectually and receive an education comparable to that offered at the very best institutions in the country.
Only those students with outstanding credentials and a strong motivation to succeed in a challenging environment are admitted to this program of study. The program is highly selective and limited to a maximum of thirty students per class.
The diploma of a student completing the requirements of the Mechanical Engineering Honors Program with a Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 will indicate participation in the program. Students completing all requirements with exceptional GPA's will be considered for the designation High Honors.
It is recommended that students in the Honors Program take the Honors versions of MATH, CHEM, and PHYS when available. These courses are listed below in the Freshman and Sophomore years. ENME courses are listed in the Junior and Senior years. The remaining courses, which are required of all students in Mechanical Engineering will be taken with the main body of students.
