Professor Ashwani Gupta Awarded Honorary Doctorate

Distinguished University Professor Ashwani Gupta has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Derby. He was also the commencement speaker at their class of 2015 commencement ceremony held on January 15, 2016. The Chancellor of the University, Peregrine Cavendish, the Duke of Devonshire, was on hand to bestow the recognition.

Derby is the hometown of Rolls Royce Aero Engine Division company. Their jet engines are used worldwide in various commercial aviation aircrafts and stationary power plants. Gupta had previously worked at International Combustion (now Rolls Royce Ltd) in Derby.

Gupta has previously received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and King Mungkut University of Technology North Bangkok, Thailand that was bestowed by the Princess of Thailand. He also holds Higher Doctorates (DSc) from his alma mater, the University of Southampton and the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom.

Additionally, Gupta was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), United Kingdom earlier this year. This is the highest professional recognition bestowed by the RAeS.

Gupta has been a faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Maryland since 1983, following six years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a member of the research staff in the Energy Laboratory and Department of Chemical Engineering, and three years at Sheffield University as an independent research worker and research fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Fuel Technology. 

He has over 35 years of experience in combustion engineering, and is the author of over 550 technical papers, three books and 10 edited books. Gupta is currently Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics AIAA), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and International Society of Energy and Environment Sustainability (ISEES).
