Doctorate student Sandip Haldar won the George R. Irwin Travel Award to support travel to an academic conference and present his research on experimental/fracture mechanics.  Haldar received $600 to help him attend the
SEM XII International Congress and Exposition on Experimental and Applied Mechanics in Costa Mesa, California June 11 - 14.

Haldar’s advisor, Prof. Hugh Bruck  helped him with his research and encouraged him to apply for the award.  He will present a technical paper on his research into the reinforced foam core sandwich composite.  The goal of Haldar’s work is to develop sandwich composites with enhanced mechanical behavior, energy absorbance and damage resistance.

The George R. Irwin Travel Award is given to graduate students to present their research results in the areas of fracture mechanics or experimental mechanics at technical meetings.  Sandip is the second student to receive the award this fiscal year.  Chandradip Patel, the first student to receive the award, received $400 in October 2011.
