First year Ph.D. student Zhijian Zhang won first place for his poster presentation at the Student Poster Competition in Optics and Photonics on April 20.  The competition took place at the Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building and was sponsored by the D.C.-Northern VA and Baltimore chapters of IEEE Photonics Society along with the university’s SPIE/OSA student chapter and the National Capital Section of OSA.  Zhang received a certificate and a $300 prize.

Zhang’s poster presentation focused on investigating fiber optic tweezers for nano/microscale particle manipulation, which is also his research focus at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.  Zhang said his advisor Prof. Miao Yu was a big help and contributed to his success…”.  “We improved every sentence and every figure in my poster together,” Zhang said.  Winning the competition has given Zhang greater confidence and has encouraged him to continue to produce high quality work.
