2006 ME Research Review Day Highlights

The Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Maryland, College Park conducted a successful Research Review Day on March 20, 2006 at the University Inn and Conference Center. The purpose of the event was to update the technical community on the wide range of high quality research being conducted in the Department and to encourage further participation.

The open-house event kicked off a week of research review meetings for both the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering and the CALCE Electronic Products and Systems Center. Decision makers from industry, government, and academia, along with university alumni, faculty, and graduate students were present learn more about the future of Maryland’s most advanced products and systems.

Panelists for the event discussing the role of University research in developing U.S. preparedness and competitiveness included Dr. Richard Carlin, Undersea Weapons and Naval Materials Division, ONR; Dr. Mark Lewis, Chief Scientist of the USAF; and Dr. Hratch Semerjian, Deputy Director of NIST.

Dr. Michael Zachariah, Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Chemistry; Dr. Don DeVoe, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Bioengineering Program; and Dr. Satyandra K. Gupta, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Institute for Systems Research were on hand to showcase the emerging science and technology research conducted in the department.

Department research centers were showcased by presentations from Dr. Reinhard Radermacher, Director of the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering; Dr. Amr Baz, Director of the Small Smart Systems Center; Dr. Patrick McCluskey, CALCE EPSC; Dr. Ali Mosleh, Director of the Center for Risk and Reliability; and Mr. James M. Short, Deputy Director, DoD Liaison, for The Center for Energetic Concepts Development.

Panel sessions were followed by graduate student presentations of over 60 research projects and posters.
