This workshop seeks to identify the dominant challenges/bottlenecks in the realization of nano-engineered products, and propose a collaborative industry-government-academia research roadmap to tackle them. The uniqueness of this workshop is that it looks at the entire product realization process, including: design, metrology, manufacturing, and system integration. We will also explore the broader interactions between productrealization research, and such factors as life-cycle economics, intellectual property issues, policy-making, education and training.

The focus is specifically on products engineered from nanoscale building blocks, such as particles, tubes, fibers, rods, and ribbons. Given the enormous breadth of nanotechnology, this focus is needed, to make the output constructive & not too diffused. We are trying to identify product realization challenges at two different levels: (1) the building blocks (nanoscale particles, tubes, fibers, ribbons, rods) (2) end-products based on these building blocks.

The workshop is divided into a series of panels. Each panel session will be approximately two hours long. It will be moderated by the session organizer & will consist of 4-5 speakers from academia, industry, and government labs/agencies. Each panel session will include brief presentations by the panel members, followed by discussions with the session participants. The output of each panel will be a catalog of the key relevant challenges in product realization, and a draft research roadmap to tackle them.
