Undergraduate Awards

A. James Clark School of Engineering Dean's Award - Rachel Kerzner
Presented to a senior for academic excellence, leadership and service to the Clark School.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Senior Award - Robert Newby
Presented to the senior member who has contributed most to the student chapter.

Department of Mechanical Engineering Academic Achievement Award - Bradley Eisenberg
Awarded to the junior in mechanical engineering who has attained the highest overall academic average.

Department of Mechanical Engineering Chair’s Award - Stephanie Karpovitch and   Rachel Kerzner
Presented for excellence in academics, outstanding service to the department, or leadership in the department.

Department of Mechanical Engineering Service Award - Mark Bellingham, Jonathan Chung, and Marisa Cicale
Awarded for outstanding service to the department, or leadership in the department.

Dinah Berman Memorial Award - Bradley Eisenberg
Presented to an engineering student who has combined academic excellence with demonstrated leadership or service to the Clark School as a freshman and sophomore.

Goldwater Scholarship - Heather Bradshaw
This prestigious honor is awarded to university students based on academic merit. The number of scholarships awarded is related to the number of Congressional districts in the student’s state of permanent residence. Ms. Bradshaw is the only recipient of this prominent award on the University of Maryland College Park campus.  More>>

Hoffman Scholarship - Mahdie Eydgahi and Sarah Grice
This fund was created by Richard M. Hoffman, a 1972 Business and Management alumnus, in honor of his parents Leon D. and Virginia M. Hoffman, Jr. The scholarship supports two Maryland residents, either juniors or seniors, enrolled in Mechanical Engineering in the Clark School, who also maintain a GPA of 3.0 and have a special interest in Physics.

Kim A. Borsavage and Pamela J. Stone Student Award for Outstanding Service -   Heather Bradshaw
The award was established in May 1995 by an anonymous donor, in honor of Kim A. Borsavage and Pamela J. Stone to publicly recognize their dedicated service to the A. James Clark School of Engineering. The award is given to a student in the A. James Clark School of Engineering who exemplifies outstanding dedication and service.

Pi Tau Sigma Memorial Award - Catherine Wienke
Presented to the senior in Mechanical Engineering who has made the most outstanding contributions  to the University.

Pi Tau Sigma Outstanding Service Award - Kevin Brilhart
Presented to a member for outstanding service and contributions to the student chapter.

Pi Tau Sigma Outstanding Sophomore Award - Erick Alves De Sa and Ethan Schaler
Presented to the sophomores in Mechanical Engineering who have attained the highest scholastic average

Truman Scholarship - Phillip Hannan
The $30,000 merit-based scholarship is presented each year to college juniors, from across the country, who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or public service.  More>>

2008 Student of the Year Award (DOT/FAA) - Katrina Groth
Students from over 60 universities participate in FAA Corp of Engineers’ projects, and the prestigious Student of the Year award is presented to one student from each of seven Centers of Excellence. Students are honored for their achievements and promise for future contributions to the transportation field. The award includes a DOT or FAA internship provision.

The A. James Clark (AJC) fellowship award supplements teaching assistantships and research assistantships.

Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship - Pedro Quintero
The Sloan Fellowships were established in 1955 to provide support and recognition to early-career scientists and scholars, and to identify those who show the most outstanding promise of making fundamental contributions to new knowledge.

Amelia Earhart Fellowship - Gayatri Cuddalorepatta
The fellowship memorializes famed air pioneer Amelia Earhart, who disappeared over the Pacific in 1937. By remembering Amelia Earhart through this fellowship, Zonta International encourages and supports women to expand their horizons by pursuing aerospace-related sciences and aerospace engineering.

Ann G. Wylie Dissertation Fellowship - Ahmed A. Abdelhafez, Yuxiang Liu, and Ying Shi Awarded based on the likelihood of the student’s completing the dissertation during the fellowship year, the quality of the student’s work, and the potential contribution/significance of the dissertation to the student’s field of research.

ARCS Fellowship - James Diorio
The ARCS Foundation is dedicated to providing scholarships to outstanding students pursuing degrees in science and engineering.

ASHRAE Scholarship - Ebrahim Al-Hajri and Mohamed Al-Shehhi
This scholarship was created by ASHRAE to support outstanding graduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering who are specializing in the HVAC area.

Best M.S. Thesis- Silas Nesson
Best Ph.D. Dissertation - Mian Li
Each of the four Mechanical Engineering divisions nominated one M.S. and one Ph.D. student whose ME degree was conferred in calendar year 2007. The committee met on April 10, 2008 to decide on the best thesis and dissertation.

C. Raymond Knight/ARINC Scholarship - Robin Berthier
C. Raymond Knight Endowed Scholarship - Pingfeng Wang
Mr. C. Raymond Knight endowed this fund to support the recruitment of academically talented students for the reliability engineering program in the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Student recipients are selected based on academic merit.

Charles Hutchins Educational Grant - Gayatri Cuddalorepatta
The $5,000 grant is awarded annually to a graduate-level student pursuing a degree and working on thesis research in electronic assembly, electronics packaging, or a related field.

Fischell Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering - Marc Dandin
This is a competitive doctoral fellowship awarded to a student who submits a business plan describing their ideas to develop and market a medical device or system that will improve health. Although Mr. Dandin is in the Biomedical Engineering department, he is co-advised by Professor Elizebeth Smela of Mechanical Engineering.  More>>

The Future Faculty Fellow program has been introduced to increase the number of Clark School Ph.D. graduates who obtain academic positions--in particular faculty positions in prestigious engineering schools.  In addition, the Program is intended to improve the preparation of students for academic careers so that they can better succeed once they obtain such a position. Students admitted to the program are designated as Future Faculty Fellows.  The program is highly selective. Fellows are chosen based on motivation for becoming a faculty member and potential for securing a tenure-track faculty position at a top-50 engineering school.

Hulka Energy Fellowship - Elnaz Kermani
This fellowship was awarded to in support of Ms. Kermani’s research towards the "Cooling of Photovoltaic Arrays for High Efficiency Solar Energy Conversion Systems," to establish a more economic and eco-friendly power generation base.

Litton Fellowship - Steven DeCaluwe
This award was established by Litton Industries to support outstanding full-time graduate students in pursuit of a doctorate degree in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and who are committed to a teaching career in engineering education.

NSF Bridge Fellowship - Sophoria Westmoreland
The Bridge to Doctorate Program is an extension of our Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation Grant. It supports students who attended LSAMP institutions as undergraduates and who later want to pursue a graduate education. The overall mission is to increase the number of underrepresented students who receive doctoral degrees in science or engineering.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program - Rebecca Kokes and Jessica Sheehan
The fellowship provides students with three years of funding for research-focused Master’s and PhD degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program is to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and to reinforce its diversity.

Pi Tau Sigma Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award - Mary Vechery (Spring 2007) and Philip Knowles (Fall 2007)
The Pi Tau Sigma Teaching Assistant Appreciation Award is presented to a TA for their excellent dedication and contributions to teaching undergraduate students. This award is bestowed each semester to the most qualified candidate.

Suez Energy Fellowship (formerly Trigen Fellowship) - Kyle Gluesenkamp and Varun Singh
This fellowship was established by Trigen-Cinergy Solutions of College Park, LLC, to provide an operating fund to support a graduate fellowship in energy conversion through the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering and eight undergraduate scholarships. Junior and senior electrical and mechanical engineering students were selected on the basis of academic merit and a demonstrated interest in studying energy conversion.

Willie Webb Award - Danielle Chrun and Ying Shi
The Miss Willie M. Webb Reliability Engineering Fellowship Endowment was established in 2004 by Ms. Willie M. Webb. This endowment provides an annual scholarship for a graduate reliability engineering student, enrolled in the A. James Clark School of Engineering, who has demonstrated interest and experience in increasing the participation of underrepresented minorities and women in engineering.
